Investigators said a child playing with a lighter may have started a tragic
early morning fire in the East Bay Saturday, killing a six-year-old girl.
The deadly, two-alarm blaze started shortly after 3 a.m. in a downstairs
apartment in a building at 1026 Power Avenue in Pittsburg.
Firefighters said the child's mother desperately tried to save the
girl, but the woman could not get past the huge flames to her daughter's bedroom.
It was believed the little girl died while sleeping in her bed, authorities
Four other apartment units were damaged in the fire, and nine residents
in total were displaced.
Investigators said it appeared another child playing with a lighter may
have started the fire.
No other injuries were reported, fire officials said.
