6-Year old Girl Dies in Pittsburg Apartment Fire

June 27, 2009 - Pittsburg, CA

Investigators said a child playing with a lighter may have started a tragic early morning fire in the East Bay Saturday, killing a six-year-old girl.

The deadly, two-alarm blaze started shortly after 3 a.m. in a downstairs apartment in a building at 1026 Power Avenue in Pittsburg.

Firefighters said the child's mother desperately tried to save the girl, but the woman could not get past the huge flames to her daughter's bedroom.

It was believed the little girl died while sleeping in her bed, authorities indicated.

Four other apartment units were damaged in the fire, and nine residents in total were displaced.

Investigators said it appeared another child playing with a lighter may have started the fire.

No other injuries were reported, fire officials said.
