Five Injured in Head-On Collision Friday Night Near Yuba County Line
JUNE 21, 2009 - Five people were hospitalized, including three with major injuries, following a collision
on Highway 70, authorities said. The most seriously injured included Nicholas Amaral, 22, of Sacramento, who was driving a truck and trailer south near the Bear River Bridge. According to the California Highway Patrol, he failed to slow for approaching construction in a one-way controlled traffic area, clipped the back of a vehicle and then collided head on with another truck and trailer, authorities said. Amaral suffered major injuries, including a compound fracture of his leg, and was in stable condition at UC Davis Medical Center. Amaral's front-seat passenger, 22-year-old Scott Anthony Barnes of Sacramento, sustained major head injuries
and was listed in critical condition at Sutter Roseville Medical Center. Another passenger, Samantha Irene Wheeler, 19, of Sacramento, sustained severe internal injuries and was in critical condition at UC Davis Medical Center. The three occupants of Amaral's truck were not wearing seat belts, authorities said. The driver of the other truck, identified as 51-year-old Robert Wesley Tyson of Oroville, was treated for neck and back pain at Sutter Roseville Medical Center and released. The driver of the vehicle clipped by Amaral, 21-year-old Kevin Yang of Sacramento, was treated at the scene for neck pain. The CHP said alcohol was not a factor. Their investigation is ongoing.
