June 26, 2009 - Tracy, CA.  An early-morning car crash Friday on MacArthur Drive killed one woman and badly injured her 3-year-old son.

As of Friday afternoon, the boy is in fair condition, Tracy police spokesman Sgt. Tony Sheneman said, and is resting in the pediatric intensive care unit at the University of California, Davis, Medical Center. He was initially listed in critical condition.

Sheneman said police received a call at 3:04 a.m. Friday about an accident on the 1800 block of MacArthur Drive near a curve south of Grant Line Road. Officers arrived two minutes later and found a gray Mitsubishi Eclipse had smashed into a tree.

The 22-year-old woman driving the car was pronounced dead at the scene. Her 3-year-old son, who was thrown from the car, was found about 35 feet north of the crash site in a dry streambed. He was taken to the UC Davis Medical Center by helicopter.

Sheneman said the cause of the accident is still unknown. He said there have been no statements made as to what happened, but police have scanned the damage to the car and will do a computer simulation next week to try to get a better idea of the cause.

He said the mom and her son lived on the outskirts of Tracy.

Police closed the road from the time they arrived until about 9 a.m., Sheneman said.

June 27, 2009 - Pittsburg, CA

Investigators said a child playing with a lighter may have started a tragic early morning fire in the East Bay Saturday, killing a six year old girl.

The deadly, two-alarm blaze started shortly after 3 a.m. in a downstairs apartment in a building at 1026 Power Avenue in Pittsburg.

Firefighters said the child's mother desperately tried to save the girl, but the woman could not get past the huge flames to her daughter's bedroom.

It was believed the little girl died while sleeping in her bed, authorities indicated.

Four other apartment units were damaged in the fire, and nine residents in total were displaced.

Investigators said it appeared another child playing with a lighter may have started the fire.

No other injuries were reported, fire officials said.

JUNE 26, 2009 - MIAMI, OK -

MIAMI, OK -- The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is dealing with a major incident on the Will Rogers Turnpike.

The Oklahoma Turnpike Authority tells The News On 6 that eight people were killed in a crash involving five cars and a semi.

Video from SkyNews6 showed a semi sitting on top of a minivan and another smaller car.  Rescue crews were using three wreckers to try to pull the truck off of the smaller vehicles.

OHP Lt. George Brown said traffic was stopped because of an earlier crash when the big rig slammed into at least three cars, which then crashed into more vehicles.

So far, the OHP has not released any details on the fatalities, including whether they were in the two vehicles that were crushed under the semi or if they were in some of the other cars.

In addition to the first pile-up, the OHP is working three other wrecks in the area.

Meantime, the Emergency Operation Center was on the scene delivering water to motorists stranded on the turnpike due to the wreck.

CHP units responded to a collision on southbound state Highway 87 near Norman Mineta San Jose International Airport at around 10:10 p.m., CHP Officer Ralph Caggiano said. Two vehicles had apparently collided head on, causing one of them to burst into flames.

JUNE 23, 2009 - PASADENA -

An accident involving a Pasadena ARTS bus and a car on Tuesday morning has injured seven people. Paramedics were sent to Holly Street and Raymond Ave at about 10:30 a.m.  The bus apparently jumped the curb during the collision. It knocked down a traffic signal before finally coming to a stop against a palm tree.

According to police, one of the vehicles ran a red light before the bus accident, but they are still investigating who was at fault here. Seven people sustained moderate injuries, including back and neck injuries. At least three other people sustained minor injuries, and were treated at the scene and released. The driver of the sedan was also evaluated at the scene before being released.

According to police, it was extremely fortunate that there were no injuries to pedestrians at the site. There usually tends to be heavy pedestrian traffic in the area as people walk in and out of the Senior Center. Investigations into the bus accident have already begun, and will take a while to complete.

Closure near Red Barn to improve safety on Highway 101

JUNE 24, 2009 - AROMAS -   The state transportation department announced last week it will be closing the southbound Hwy. 101 left-turn lane just after San Juan Road near the Red Barn by Monday, according to a press release.

The closure means drivers no longer can turn left at that point - typically to stop at the Red Barn or go northbound on Hwy. 101 - and are encouraged to turn around at the Highways 101-156 interchange. The press statement also notes that motorists also will be prohibited from making U-turns on southbound Hwy. 101 between San Juan Road and San Miguel Canyon Road.

Caltrans pointed out that the closure is intended to reduce the number of collisions along the busy corridor in northern Monterey County.

For the project, crews will restripe that section of Hwy. 101 and raise the curb to eliminate the southbound left-turn lane. Traffic signs prohibiting U-turns will be installed, and the work will be done in conjunction with a current paving job on Hwy. 101 at the San Juan Road intersection, according to the press release.
