JUNE 25, 2009 - SAN JOSE,CA  - One victim involved in a vehicle collision in San Jose Wednesday night was pronounced dead at a hospital Thursday morning, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

CHP units responded to a collision on southbound state Highway 87 near Norman Mineta San Jose International Airport at around 10:10 p.m., CHP Officer Ralph Caggiano said. Two vehicles had apparently collided head on, causing one of them to burst into flames.

One female and a 20-year-old man were taken to a hospital with critical injuries, Caggiano said, and all three lanes of the roadway were blocked while emergency crews responded.

The female victim died from her injuries, Caggiano confirmed, and the man remained in critical condition with broken legs and hands.

A Sig-alert was issued at 10:23 p.m., and traffic had to be diverted off of Highway 87 at Skyport Drive. The right lane reopened to traffic at about 11:20 p.m., and all lanes were fully cleared just after midnight.

The crash was still being investigated this morning by the CHP, Caggiano said.
